Transforming crane maintenance: Implementing data-driven approaches to reduce unplanned downtime

An offshore crane OEM had ambitions to be a trusted service provider implementing a proactive approach to maintenance routines and equipment monitoring using data science and analytics.

Challenge

A leading offshore crane manufacturer had an ambition to be a trusted service provider by implementing a more proactive approach to maintenance routines and equipment monitoring by using data science and analytics.

Operations, maintenance, spare parts, and other operational related activities used to be planned ahead based on past experience. Any unavailabilities of the right spare parts or other operational requirements during any unplanned incident offshore resulted in prolonged downtime and considerable lost revenue for the OEMs' customers.

Solution

We worked closely with the customer and deployed a cloud-based prototype solution to monitor component condition and predict potentially critical performance issues with recommended actions. There is also a KPIs system which raises alert to operators offshore when there is a combination of sensors that deviate from "normal" behaviors. We created an end-to-end product configuration and UX/UI at a point where it is ready for corporate wide digital transformation program rollout.

Results

Based on the delivered solution, the customer have already engaged with their customers to realise new services and business models.
